6 New Year’s Resolutions for A Healthy Mind and Body

It’s the time of year when we all do some major reflection. Remembering our resolutions from last year, what we have achieved this past year and what we want to achieve in the coming year. It can feel like a good time to restart unfinished and failed goals. Finding motivation all over again and energizing ourselves for the new year. 

Overall wellness is something we should all be working towards. But many of us don’t write it down as a personal goal. The truth is that you can’t afford to put it on the back burner. Your health and well-being depend on your ability to maintain a strong and positive body and mind. Give More

This year make a goal to give more than you take. It is amazing how much of a difference we can make to others in the world and how good we feel intrinsically by making the conscious effort to simply give more.

Giving comes in many forms. Maybe you volunteer your time or give someone much needed advice. Perhaps you give monetary means to a charitable foundation or material items to those in need. Whatever your decision, ensure to keep the benefit of others in mind.

Laugh More

Laughing, not only puts us in a good mood but also has major health benefits. A solid, hearty laugh actually reduces tension and stress and can leave your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter also increases immune cells and bacteria-fighting antibodies decreasing the risk of disease and illness.

There are a handful of ways that you can laugh more. Hang out with people who have your sense of humor, watch funny Youtube videos, or a funny movie. Invite some friends over and play some cards or board games. My personal favorite way to laugh is to search for comedy shows, they are almost always cheaper and you usually end up with a belly ache from laughing so hard.

It is never too late to go back to school and upgrade your knowledge and skills. We all have busy lives, but taking a little bit of time to learn something new or brush up on skills can only be beneficial. Is there something you have been wanting to learn but never had the time?

Learning should be an ongoing process. People who learn new skills are less likely to develop conditions like dementia or Alzheimers. Take the initiative to do an online course, go to night school, or inquire at work to learn a new skill. It is so important to continue the quest for knowledge – we cannot remain stagnant in our learning! New skills can open up doors for promotions, higher pay, or maybe that career change you have been meaning to do. You never know the opportunities that may arise. Love More

Let 2020 be the year that we choose to let go of the negativity and spread love instead. Not just to others, but to ourselves. We tend to be our own toughest critics. Love can act like a catalyst for the inner self. It makes us want to do good and live a better life. Too often love and kindness is put on the back burner in place of pride and ego. Let love be the forethought instead of the afterthought.

Love comes in many forms. It could be forgiveness, kindness, laughter, or doing something nice for someone special. Let your positivity and creativity flow. Negativity in any form bogs us down and we end up unknowingly spreading that negativity to others around us. Make a resolution to be more kind and to love one another.

Exercise more

This is a really popular resolution already but an extremely important one. Just remember to be physically active more often. Sometimes making unrealistic specific weight and dietary goals can cause obsession and lead to a broken self-image. People spend hundreds of dollars, lots of effort, and precious time attempting fad diets and crazy exercise regimens.

30 minutes of physical activity a day is all it takes to keep the blood flowing and the joints and bones healthy. It also significantly decreases the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and disease. Studies have also linked exercise with healthy aging. You can easily achieve this with a good brisk walk or a quick trip to the gym. 

Sleep More

Most of us do not get 8 hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep has a significant impact on our daily lives like decreasing our ability to problem-solve effectively. We end up with extreme fatigue and an inability to focus. Feeling tired at work means our ability to be productive suffers. If we are tired all day, our evening becomes even harder. Especially when we have to make dinner, tend to our partners, children, pets, and on top of that have some time to ourselves to wind down after a hard day.

No matter what happens in your day, make a resolution to set a bedtime routine that will help you sleep better. Sleep actually heals our bodies and repairs our heart and blood vessels. Turn off the electronics, create a good night time skin regimen, and make a real effort to go to sleep at a time that gives you at least 7 hours of snooze time. It is amazing what one can accomplish with a proper night’s sleep.
