8 Common Areas Of Self-Improvement


Before we talk about the 8 common areas of self-improvement I want to first say that this was the starting point for my personal wellness journey. I want to give you a little introduction about what a wellness journey is. I’m sure everyone has heard the phrase health & wellness. Most people use these terms interchangeably but the truth is they are not one and the same. The term wellness means to pursue a lifestyle that’s focused on maintaining your overall health. Whereas the word health literally means being free of illness or injury. Therefore, a wellness journey is an ongoing process in which you actively pursue a healthy and happy lifestyle. Finding the right information and tools that improve your health and applying them to your daily life. Then beginning to create a unique lifestyle that gives you purpose. A wellness journey should be lifelong and personal with the end result being a strong mind, body, and soul.

Now that we know our common goal, it’s time to talk about how to get there. The best way to begin your journey is to understand the eight interdependent subcategories that together create our body, mind, and soul’s basic requirements. They are the common areas of self-improvement but are better known as the 8 dimensions of wellness. As you read about each – think of how you can improve each one in your own life.

Environmental 

Environmental wellness journey

The environment we live in plays a huge roll in our well-being. Dirty, messy spaces tend to make us feel uncomfortable. Studies have proven that clean and organized spaces allow increased productivity and growth. Only then can our minds truly focus on what will pave the road for future success.

Looking at a larger scale, our outside environment works the same way. We often take advantage of basic privileges like clean air and water but the truth is that without them we would not feel as happy or as healthy. It is so important to make our outside environment just as pleasant as our inside environment. Help clean the oceans, pick up litter, and plant more trees. We each can do our part to keep our world healthy.  

Emotional

Emotional well-being means the ability to remain stable with complete control of your behavior, feelings, and reactions. Working towards being able to do the same for others. Our feelings are the guide to our actions. Someone with strong emotional well-being has learned to harness the power of resiliency andovercome difficult times with a clear and confident thought process.

The road to stability is long and can be trying for those that struggle with aggression or other intense emotions. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.

The 5 categories are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. These are components that you can reflect upon to determine where you may need to improve.

Financial Wellness

Financial wellness is the health of your current financial situation and the degree of satisfaction with future financial situations. The goal should be to pay your bills on time, manage your debt effectively, keep a healthy emergency fund, and still have funds left over to put away as savings.

Do what you can to minimize financial worry and stress. Familiarize yourself with your family’s spending habits. Then create a budget that encourages you to save for the future while meeting all your needs in the present. The best advice I was given was to track my spending over the previous 3 months and analyze my spending habits. Another tip is to come to terms with the amount of debt you are in. Get familiar with that number as it becomes easier to deal when you understand how you got there and properly plan what your next steps are.

Social

Social well-being is learning to nurture and develop a sense of connection and belonging. Everybody has the basic need for companionship. The stronger your relationships with friends and family are, the more likely you are to have strong mental health. “Spending time with friends and family is surprisingly important to brain health as we age,” says Sarah Lock, the council’s executive director, and AARP senior vice president. “And it’s not just the numbers of social connections you have. The type, quality, and purpose of your relationships can affect your brain functions, as well.”

A well-developed support system encourages self-love, confidence, and happiness. Work to build deeper connections with those you love and be open to the potential for new friendships. You can do this a number of ways.

  • Sign up for clubs, sports teams, or political activities.
  • Make a point of reaching out to family members regularly.
  • Volunteer at your local community centers or schools.
  • Consider adopting a pet, they can be an excellent source of love and companionship.

Spiritual

Spiritual well-being is about expanding your sense of meaning and purpose. This can happen through music, art, or a higher power, but you do not have to be religious to develop spiritual well-being. The goal is to work towards a firm direction in life and a commitment to your own core values so you can create a strong moral compass.   

You can develop your spiritual well being by

  • Looking for deeper meaning
  • Meditation/ Yoga
  • Expressing yourself openly
  • Travel
  • Establishing your core values and principles
  • Religious congregations

Occupational

Occupational well-being is personal satisfaction and enrichment in your work. Do you love what you do? Do you see yourself doing something else? Job enrichment can’t exist unless you are happy in your work. Do not dedicate your time and effort in doing something that does not give you happiness in the process. Try to eliminate or at least minimize workplace stress by choosing a career path that excites you and then getting the necessary support to achieve your ideal job. It’s also about seeking further development of skills and opportunities once you’re on a career path your interest in. As well as learning to nurture healthy relationships with your boss and coworkers.

Physical

Recognizing your need for physical activity, healthy foods, and proper sleep. There needs no explanation as to the importance of a healthy diet or an active lifestyle, but you should remember that without either of those our moods, mindsets, and motivation diminish over time. Reflect on some areas you could improve on and set up goals to achieve them. A lot of the time people who wish to improve on their health and fitness start with a weight loss goal. Although weight is sometimes a good way to measure your progress, I discourage it from being a starting goal. The goal should be to develop a proper diet detailed to your needs, to feel healthier, and to boost your daily energy. Daily exercise should still be apart of your plan, but trying to reach a particular number can lead to obsessions with the weight scale, and encourage poor eating habits.

Intellectual

Intellectual well-being is split into two components. The first is utilizing any resources available to acquire skills and knowledge. The second is to develop important brain functions such as problem solving, memory, and creativity. Developing brain functions can be as simple as doing brain teasers and word puzzles on a regular basis. Acquiring skills and knowledge is beneficial to us in a variety of ways. With the fast-paced world we live in, it is imperative that we constantly improve our skill sets. Take computers for example. 30 years ago computer skills would be considered an asset, but not a necessity on a resume. Now, a candidate applying for a job MUST have computer skills. Some employers automatically assume that you possess these skills if you are applying. It is now an expectation.

We can use newly acquired skills as leverage for promotions, or higher pay. The goal of continuous learning is that we further ourselves in profitable and favorable ways. Udemy is an amazing online community with lots of online courses that can be taken in the comfort of your own home and in your own time frame.
